Fire Island is dotted all summer with the common rose, rosa rugosa, often called beach roses or dune roses by the locals. Although not native plants, they do serve to combat erosion, a big problem on barrier islands like Fire Island and Long Island, which lose acres of sand to the elements each year. The colorwork pattern in this cute cap and matching mitts is called "thorns" but these won't prick you like the real ones!
